Gedurende de laatste decennia van vorige eeuw speelde de pers een leidende rol in de sociale beweging omdat zij het publiek alert maakte voor de harde werkelijkheid van de dagelijkse realiteit. Die fotografen waren ook ooggetuige voor de veranderingen binnen de samenleving met de opkomende protestbewegingen en afkeer voor autoritaire machtsstructuren.

Odette Dereze - en haar generatie persfotografen - zochten altijd een evenwicht dat moest balanceren tussen twee waarden: er bestaat geen schoonheid zonder inhoud en omgekeerd. De rand of de hoek van een beeld, is zoals het einde van een zin.

Het is de drager van een betekenis die bedacht werd door zijn maker. Elk element moet zijn plaats en betekenis vinden in de compositie en is verbonden met de andere elementen en het geheel.

Het was de opkomst van de auteursfotografie binnen de fotojournalistiek.
